Importing cars to certain different countries requires you to have owned and used your car for a pre-determined period of time.  This varies depending on the import country.  Some common examples are:
  • Sending a car to Australia: be advised that you will need to have owned and used the car for twelve (12) months prior to import.
  • Sending a car to New Zealand: duty does not apply to motor cars being imported in to New Zealand. However, to gain entry free of GST (Goods & Services Tax) a client must be a first time immigrant with permanent residency, having owned and used the vehicle for at least 12 months prior to either handing in your car for shipment, or your departure from the overseas country (whichever is the earlier).  If you do not meet this criteria, then GST will apply at 12.50% of the CIF value (Car Cost, Insurance for shipping, Freight cost) In the Car cost  a depreciation factor is taken into account depending on how long the vehicle has been owned. Essentially, approximating the charges you would have paid if the car was bought in New Zealand.
  • Sending a car to the United Kingdom: be advised that you will need to have owned and used the car for six (6) months prior to import.
Certain countries require import permits for vehicles.  We can help you to check the import permit requirements of the country you are planning to ship the vehicle to. Please make sure you obtain the import permit if it is required We are unable to ship vehicles that have not been issued with the necessary permits.

Deregistering a car in Hong Kong

Once your car has left Hong Kong, you will need to de-register your car and submit your road registration back to the government.  You will be able to claim your unused road license fee. We are able to assist you in getting this paperwork done.  Please note however that you may need to keep the original Hong Kong road registration certificate for the registration formalities in your destination country.
