 Shanghai offers a myriad of choice of accommodation options to fit every expat's lifestyle, budget and location requirements. From downtown studios for the young urban professional to gated villa communities for the expatriate family, the options are varied and ever expanding.
The following sites are all well-established on-line resources for property leasing in Shanghai, tailored specifically to the needs of Shanghai's expatriate communities.
When choosing accommodation in Shanghai, consider the following:
- East or West? Of the river that is. Pudong is great for families. It's spacious, relatively green and relatively quiet. It's new and is still developing its own character. It does however lack the entertainment options available in Puxi and does not have the charm of the more established districts of Shanghai.
- School or work? If you have kids, it's not easy to be close to both and likely that one party will have at least a 45 minute commute.
- Trek or train? Shanghai's underground train system is excellent. If you don't have access to a private car, then the metro is a godsend on rainy days when the taxis all seem to disappear.
- Old or new? Old lane house in the former French Concession or new high rise in Jing'an Park? Whilst the older properties have bags of charm and character, they can also offer practical challenges if they have not be properly maintained.
- Foreign or local? A number of villa compounds and apartment complexes are almost exclusively inhabited by foreigners. If you want to get under the skin of Shanghai, then living in a Hutong is the way to go.
