Export a pet

Repatriating your pet "back home" may prove to be a more arduous exercise for you and can be a very stressful time for you and your pet. We suggest that you get very clear information on your home country’s rules and regulations before deciding to bring your pet with you.

Guide to exporting a pet: Documents Required

To give you an indication as to what is required to export a pet to some common countries, please refer to the table and information below.  This will give you a rough idea as to the requirements to import cats and dogs into various countries.  Please note that the requirements change from time to time.  Our relocations consultant will be happy to advise you on the most up-to-date requirements in connection with your move.

Exporting a pet to Canada1

  • Import permits may be required for animals other than dogs and cats.
  • Some airlines accept pets as excess baggage.
  • Normal preparation time for exporting dogs and cats: approximately one month.
  • Usually no quarantine is required.

Exporting a pet to China

  • Rabies vaccination must be no more than 12 months but no less than 30 days before arrival.
  • Form G6 for dogs and E3 for cats must be within 12 months.
  • 30 days quarantine is required - usually this can be in your own home.
  • Residency permit is required to obtain an import permit. Boarding at origin may be required until your residency permit is issued.
  • A maximum of one pet is allowed per residency permit.
  • Health certificates must be done within ten days prior to departure to China..
  • Where possible, it is advisable for your pet to travel as excess baggage to avoid "taxes and duties".

Exporting a pet to Europe

  • There have been many changes to the rules and regulations in Europe relating to pet moving.
  • New pet travelling schemes apply to some countries.
  • In other countries the pet traveling scheme has not been adopted and the rules vary.
  • Please call us to find out more about your destination requirements.

Exporting a pet to Japan

  • New regulations apply to the importation of dogs and cats.
  • No quarantine is required if all of the conditions are met.
  • Normal preparation time exporting dogs and cats: approximately 8 months.
  • We need to notify the quarantine department well in advance.

Exporting a pet to Singapore

  • One month quarantine is imposed on the importation of all pet dogs and cats.
  • Quarantine facilities are quite well organised. There are extra services available such as grooming, air-con facilities, special diet or exercise services.

Exporting a pet to Taiwan

  • Again, new regulations apply to the importation of pet dogs and cats 
  • Normal preparation time to export dogs and cats: approximately seven to eight months.
  • Limited quarantine space available, therefore, early bookings are necessary to avoid waiting for vacancies.

Exporting a pet to United Kingdom

  • In 2005 the UK introduced new regulations for pet importation-adopting the pet travelling scheme.
  • Normal preparation time for exporting dogs and cats: approximately seven months
  • Failure to supply proper documents or comply with preparation requirements can cause detention and quarantine of up to six months
  • Both dogs and cats can still be imported to UK under the old regulation, but will be required to undergo six months quarantine

Exporting a pet to America (continental USA only)1

  • An import permit may be required for animals other than dogs and cats.
  • Some airlines accept pets as excess baggage.
  • Normal preparation time for exporting dogs and cats: approximately one month.

Exporting a pet to Australia and New Zealand

  • Importing pet dogs and cats into Australia or New Zealand requires detailed planning and can be a complicated process.
  • We strongly recommend that you start preparations at least nine months before your move and use our consultant services for expert advice.
  • Please contact our consultant at the earliest opportunity if you are planning to relocate your pet to Australia or New Zealand.
