Shopping in Hong Kong

Queen's Road East, in Wanchai, the great furniture retailing and manufacturing area, sells everything from full rosewood dining sets in Ming style to furniture in French, English, and Chinese styles. Custom-made orders are accepted in most shops here. Choy Lee Co. Ltd. is the most famous.

The Banyan Tree has furniture and bric-a-brac, both old and new, from Europe, India, and Southeast Asia. Other locations: Repulse Bay Shopping Arcade, Repulse Bay, Hong Kong, 2592-8721; Ocean Terminal, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, 2730-6631; Times Square, 1 Matheson St., Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, 2506-3850.

Warehouse Outlet 18/F Horizon Plaza, 2 Lee Wing St., tel. 2555-0540 or 2877-8303

(Lesser-quality birdcages go for more than HK$800 at Stanley Market.) You can arrange to visit Banyan Tree's warehouse by calling its office. You won't get a discount if you buy from the warehouse, but you will have the chance to see -- and buy -- pieces that have just arrived.
