In Hong Kong, the British System of banking is used as the model and therefore a letter of referral may be required to open an account as well as either their passport or application for Hong Kong ID card to open a bank account. Each bank may be different, so it advisable to enquire at the bank of your choice. The most popular ones being Standard Chartered, HSBC and Citibank.
Banking hours are generally 9:30 am to 5 pm on Monday to Friday, or
9:00 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday. Newcomers to Hong Kong often find the banking quite different from what they are used to. Many local banks also offer Internet Services. Security boxes can be found at most large banks and price ranges from around HK$260.00 upwards depending on the size of the box.
