Wining & Dining in Shanghai

Continental

50 Hankou Lu
50 Hankou Lu
Shanghai, China
Phone: 021/6329-8999 or 021/6323-8383
Price - Y50 - Y165

This restaurant is in a beautiful old British building right off the Bund. The fare is a mix of East and West, and the decor is Southeast Asian, with primitive Indonesian and New Guinean full-figure wooden sculptures. The dishes -- baked escargot, grilled steak, and Caesar salad, among others -- are artfully presented, but they're fairly rich and heavy. AE, DC, MC, V.

Price - Y99 - Y165

Two of the Grand Hyatt's restaurants present Continental cuisine while offering absolutely spectacular views of Shanghai. The sophisticated 24-hour restaurant Grand Cafe touts its "show kitchen" -- a buffet that includes appetizers, daily specials, fresh seafood, and desserts. Up on the 56th floor is the Grill, part of the Hyatt's three-in-one open-kitchen restaurant concept (the connecting restaurants are Japanese and Italian), where you can feast on a great seafood platter or unbelievably tender steak. Reservations essential. AE, DC, MC, V. (

Le Garcon Chinois
No. 3
Lane 9
Hengshan lu, China
Phone: 021/6431-3005 or 021/6431-1170
Price - Y50 - Y165

You'll feel like a guest in someone's home at this dimly lit restaurant in an old French villa. The walls are painted in warm hues, the art deco fittings are tasteful, and large windows frame surrounding trees and old mansions. Run by a Japanese-European couple, the restaurant presents a Continental menu: the carpaccio, grilled duck, and grilled cod fish are all sublime. For breakfast, flaky croissants and coffee are available from the cafe-bakery downstairs in the courtyard. Reservations essential. AE, DC, MC, V.

M on the Bund
20 Guangdong Lu
Shanghai, China
Phone: 021/6350-9988
Price - Y99 - Y165

Espousing Shanghai's return to glamour, M does everything with flair. Exquisite Mediterranean-influenced cuisine is served in a classy and inspired chic-modern-meets-retro interior, on the top floor of a 1920s building. Start with the crepe Parmentier with caviar, and then try the baked lamb, the roasted pigeon, or the Shanghainese goose for dinner. The tables with the most envied views of the Bund are reserved for the elite, but the elegant terrace overlooking the river is great alternative, especially for brunch. Reservations essential. AE, DC, MC, V.
